2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Foundation’s Chairman

Foundation Message

On behalf of the Trustees of the HackensackUMC Foundation, I’d like to thank all of our long-time benefactors and the more than 700 new friends of HackensackUMC for their support. Thanks to all of you, we have experienced another extraordinary year. Your continued generosity helps HackensackUMC shape the future of healthcare.

This was a year of change at the Foundation. We introduced new leadership, expanded our staff, and positioned the Foundation to tackle the challenges that lay ahead. In 2014, the Foundation exceeded our fundraising and strategic goals. Moving forward, we are equipped to take on our largest philanthropic challenge to date — as Hackensack University Health Network and Seton Hall University recently announced plans to form a new, four-year, private school of medicine.

Significant involvement and commitment by both long-time friends and new donors resulted in a substantial increase in donations in 2014, which totaled $20 million.

Extraordinary financial commitments were made in support of the launch of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative at the Donna A. Sanzari Women’s Hospital, the construction of an educational conference room and the Heart Failure Program for the Heart & Vascular Hospital, the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program, brain and spine tumor research at the John Theurer Cancer Center and a Challenge Grant to support the creation of a new pediatric endoscopy suite for the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

Last year was among the most successful in the Foundation’s history for the Planned Giving Program with revenue and new gift intentions exceeding $8 million. It would not be possible without the continued support and hard work of Planned Giving Program Chair Justice Marie Garibaldi, whose work empowers the growth and success of this initiative.

This year, the Foundation also realized the final gift from the estate of Lydia T. Pfund, former member of the Board of Governors and the Foundation Board of Trustees. Mrs. Pfund’s bequest of $4.6 million – the largest bequest in the Foundation’s history – will provide funding for the Ledyard H. Pfund Patient Pavilion Wing and research at the John Theurer Cancer Center.

I know the entire HackensackUMC community joins me in recognizing this extraordinary gift.

The Foundation’s Special Events are always a highlight and an opportunity to engage our supporters in entertaining and unique settings. The events of 2014 were no exception. Raising $3.7 million and attracting a record-number of attendees, our happenings included the Annual Recognition Gala at world-famous Yankee Stadium, the 14th Annual Charity Run, the Annual Golf Outing at Ridgewood Country Club, and the Designer Showhouse of New Jersey.

Finally, we acknowledge the great work of our engaged physicians. Grateful patients and benefactors enjoyed private receptions with leading HackensackUMC physicians. These included Drs. Elaine Moustafellos and Wendy Jeshion, specializing in pediatric gastroenterology; Drs. Hooman Azmi and Fiona Gupta, in Parkinson’s disease; Drs. George Kaptain and Samuel Goldlust, neuro oncology; and Dr. Jacqueline Hollywood, who spoke about women’s cardiovascular care. All of these talented doctors came together to share their important work with our friends and donors.

We are truly grateful for the time, energy and growing financial support we are receiving from our physicians, donors, friends and sponsors. We remain committed to engage our donors so that they may continue to witness HackensackUMC’s delivery of the highest-quality, leading-edge and most compassionate healthcare to our community. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Ulises E. Diaz
